Our History

Gulf Coast Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter that houses and cares for approximately 3,000 dogs and cats each year. Here are some of the milestones that have shaped who we are today.

1945

Founded

On January 15, 1945, a group of animal lovers led by Frances and Harvey Weil founded the Gulf Coast Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Corpus Christi, Texas.

1947

First Permanent Home

The Society filed a charter amendment and acquired 3.2 acres of land on Navigation Boulevard — giving the animals their first permanent shelter.

1976

PAWS Era

The name was amended to PAWS–Gulf Coast Humane Society, reflecting a growing focus on animal welfare advocacy alongside sheltering.

1998

New Facility on Cabaniss Parkway

Thanks to a generous donation from Tom and Cora Keeler, the shelter moved to its current state-of-the-art facility on Cabaniss Parkway — a space built to better serve the animals and community.

Today

No-Kill & Thriving

As a 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter, GCHS now houses and cares for approximately 3,000 dogs and cats each year — continuing to complete families just as Frances Weil envisioned 80 years ago.
